Life Outside Of Teaching: Introduction

Introduction

My name is Lexi Gardner and I graduated from Framingham State University in May of 2022. At Framingham, I double majored in Early Childhood Education and Psychology while also being part of the volleyball team. I am currently working as a building substitute teacher at Robinson Elementary School in Mansfield. This school is made up of grades K-2 and I have a new role each day which makes it interesting. A little fun fact is that I went to school here as a child and many of the teachers that I had are still there. I always love sharing with the kids that I went to school to this school when I was younger and their eyes light up with amazement! I am hoping to have my own classroom soon as I am in the process of applying for full time positions. My dream grade to teach is kindergarten as this was the grade that I taught half of my student teaching in and I absolutely fell in love with it.

When I am not in school or working, one thing I always had a passion for is playing sports. My two favorite sports to play growing up was basketball and volleyball. I have tried just about every single sport as a child however, I narrowed it down to those two and continued playing them throughout high school. To this day, I always try to find some friends to play those sports with and it is always an enjoyable time. Some other hobbies of mine that I love to spend time doing include working out specifically weight lifting, walking, baking, cooking, swimming, traveling and painting! I try to make time for at least one of the hobbies I listed above each day as I find it to not only be enjoyable but also stress relieving for me. Every day after work, I do a workout video which is a new exercise each day that I will go into more detail about in my future blogs. After the video I go on long walks with my family and two year old Golden Doodle Bailey. I shared a picture of her below along with my cat Simba because I did not want to leave him out!

The purpose of my blogs is to go into more detail about some of the hobbies that I enjoy doing outside of school that I listed above. Each blog will be on a different hobby that I enjoy and I want to motivate others to try them out. Teaching can be a stressful job and it can be easy to not allow yourself to find the time outside of work to do something that brightens your mood. My goal is for everyone to try and find some time to try out some activities that I share. Every teacher deserves to have a life outside of teaching full of hobbies that make them happy!:)

  2. Hi Lexi,
It is so important to find ways to take care of yourself outside of teaching. Between teaching and working on my Masters, it can be so challenging to find time for myself but it is so necessary to be the best version of myself for my students. I have tried really hard this year to get all of my school planning done during my prep time so I have more time on the weekends for myself. Walking is also one of my favorite ways to relax and to spend time in nature. I live on Cape Cod so I enjoy taking long walks on the beach and just listening to the sound of the waves. Your pets are adorable! I love the name Simba. I am looking forward to hearing more about your hobbies! ~Megan Marquit
